Cloze and Fill-in-Blank Exercises for Vocabulary in Context
Fill-in-the-blank worksheets test the most authentic form of vocabulary knowledge: using words correctly in context. Unlike matching or multiple-choice (which test recognition), fill-in-the-blank exercises require students to actively retrieve the right word and confirm it fits both grammatically and semantically.
7 Fill-in-Blank Exercise Types
- Word Blank — select from a word bank to complete sentences
- Sentence Cloze — restore systematically removed words in sentences
- Passage Cloze — complete a short paragraph with contextually appropriate words
- Word Bank Fill — use a vocabulary set to complete multiple sentences
- Preposition Fill — choose the correct preposition (in/on/at/under/through)
- Verb Form Fill — write the correct tense form of a given verb
- Article Fill — supply a/an/the or no article in context sentences
Differentiation Built In
Each exercise type comes in two difficulty levels: with word bank (supported) and without word bank (open-ended). Word bank versions suit Grade 1-3 and beginning ESL learners; open-ended versions challenge Grade 4-6 and advanced ESL students to produce correct language independently.
